What is a law apprenticeship?

Law apprenticeships have become increasingly popular over the past few years – and it’s not hard to see why.

Apprenticeships offer a structured path to a rewarding law career. They enable you to work and study for your career at the same time, gaining practical experience while earning a salary.

There are a range of legal apprenticeships available. At BPP, we offer three pathways: the Solicitor Apprenticeship, Graduate Solicitor Apprenticeship and Paralegal Apprenticeship.

Who can study a law apprenticeship?

Law apprenticeships can help break down barriers that have traditionally made accessing legal careers difficult for many people, like the need for university qualifications, finances or even the idea that lawyers must fit a certain stereotype.

While many law apprenticeships are aimed at school leavers, they can also be a great option if you're looking for an alternative to university or considering a career change.

What do law apprentices do?

The role of a law apprentice varies depending on your apprenticeship route and whether you're employed in a firm or in-house legal team. On average, you’ll work 30 hours per week and set aside 20% as development time to complete your legal training. This may be studying face-to-face at your firm’s chosen education provider or studying online.

Typical tasks include drafting legal documents, carrying out research, supporting client matters and attending meetings or hearings, while developing core legal skills such as research, writing, communication, negotiation and advocacy.

Why study a law apprenticeship?

If you’re looking to pursue a career as a paralegal or solicitor, a law apprenticeship offers many benefits. Your training is funded by your employer, meaning you can earn a salary while you learn and avoid costly student debt.

Alongside your training, you'll gain valuable workplace experience and develop the skills, knowledge and confidence needed for your future career. Best of all, you'll have opportunities to apply what you learn in real legal settings from day one.
